Many brake pads have a built-in wear indicator that squeals when the pad gets thin. If you hear a consistent high squeal when you are not even braking, that is the pad telling you it is nearly done.
Grinding usually means the pad is gone and metal is now contacting the rotor. This is both a safety issue and a more expensive repair, because it damages the rotor. Do not wait on this one.
